ArcticNet ASM 2022 – Icebergs and Ice Islands

We are currently welcoming abstracts for our session “Icebergs and Ice Islands: Calving, Drift and Deterioration Processes” at the upcoming ArcticNet Annual Scientific Meeting, held December 5-8, 2022 in Toronto, Ontario. Please consider submitting an abstract to this session and share widely with other interested parties.

Session: MAR22 – Icebergs and Ice Islands: Calving, Drift and Deterioration Processes

Abstract: Icebergs and ice islands present a significant hazard to marine vessels and infrastructure at a time of increased marine activity in Arctic waters. Icebergs are also known to influence the surrounding ocean’s physical, chemical, and biological characteristics at both local and regional scales. Quantifying the calving, drift and deterioration of these glacial ice hazards is of importance for risk management as well as gaining a greater understanding of their impact on the marine environment. Knowledge of the distribution and physical characteristics of icebergs and ice islands can aid in the development of automated detection algorithms using satellite imagery and improve drift and deterioration models. We invite presentations focusing on any aspect of the iceberg and ice island life cycle in this session, from calving to drift and decay processes and iceberg-ocean and iceberg-sea ice interactions. We encourage contributions from researchers working in the field, modelling and remote sensing studies.
