25th Karthaus Summer School: Ice sheets and glaciers in the climate system
Announcement of the next Karthaus course on
ICE SHEETS AND GLACIERS IN THE CLIMATE SYSTEM
20 – 29 May 2025
Karthaus, Italy
The Karthaus Summer School is course sponsored by:
- The Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research, Utrecht University
- The International Glaciological Society (IGS)
- Dutch Polar Climate and Cryosphere Change Consortium (NWO-NPP)
- Earth systeM feedBack ReseArch CEntRe (EMBRACER) (NWO Summit)
- Balzan 2022 Glaciation and Ice Sheet Dynamics
- International Association of Cryospheric Sciences (IACS)
- VAW Glaciology, ETH Zurich
Scope and Participation
The course is intended for students at Ph.D.-level and provides an introduction to the dynamics of glaciers and ice sheets with a focus on ice-climate interactions.
Topics include: continuum mechanics, ice rheology, basal processes, numerical modelling, polar meteorology, ice-ocean interaction, ice cores, interaction of ice sheets with the solid earth, glaciers in the climate system, remote sensing, etc.
The course is a mix of lectures, exercises and group projects. There will be an excursion to a nearby glacier field.
The standard registration fee is € 900. This covers lodging, full board, excursion and course material. Please note that participants will share rooms.
The International Glaciological Society offers support for students who have difficulties paying the fee. This only applies to students who are not from “high-income” countries (see the IGS website https://www.igsoc.org/membership for information on this definition).
If you are qualified for applying to Karthaus but have circumstances that might make it difficult for you to attend (disabilities, care responsibilities etc.) please reach out to the organising committee. We would be happy to discuss if your needs can be accommodated.
Application
Apply for the course here: (Not yet open for applications)
The form also includes information on IGS support.
Deadline for applications (Not yet open for applications)
Prior detailed knowledge/background in glaciology is not a prerequisite but preference will be given to students with stronger math/numerical background. If there are more applicants than places, the organising committee will take into account candidates’ previous training, the potential for the course to benefit their current studies, and the diversity and geographical distribution of the cohort.
