Statement on Racism and Inequality
Around the world, people are coming together to speak out against racism and its systemic, intergenerational effects, particularly on the Black community. People in all walks of life are seeking justice and equity and are demanding change. Changes of this type require work on the part of individuals, communities and organizations of all kinds. As a scholarly community that has long valued and promoted international linkages and diverse scientific views, the International Glaciological Society (IGS) nevertheless recognizes that there is more we can do. We stand with people in the United States and around the world who are calling out for change.
The IGS condemns racism, racist acts, the systemic forces that allow and foster them, and the inequalities with which academia still struggles. As an international academic organization and learned society, we will continue on the inclusive path the IGS Core Values and Scientific Code of Conduct requires us to follow, and we encourage all of our members to learn more and to do more to make science a compassionate and inclusive space for all.
