Council
The Council is the main governing body of the Society. It consists of the following:
- The Officers – a President, a Vice-President and a Treasurer
- The Immediate Past President
- Ten Elected Members
The Society’s Chief Editor and the chairs of standing committees appointed under Article 10 of the IGS Constitution, shall be ex-officio members without the power to vote on matters that come before the Council.
Officers and Elected Members shall hold office for a term not exceeding three years without further election. At least one-third of the Elected Members shall retire each year and shall not be eligible for immediate re-election.
IGS Agendas and Report
The Society holds its Annual General Meeting every year where the President presents his/her report for the previous year and the Treasurer presents her/his report on the Society’s accounts for the previous financial year. The various agendas and reports are available to view online.
Publications Committee
The Publications Committee advises the Council on various matters relating to the publication of the Journal of Glaciology, Annals of Glaciology, ICE and such other publications as the Council from time to time determines. The committee consists of a Chair, appointed for three years, and an undisclosed number of members appointed for one year at a time. In addition, the IGS President, the IGS Chief Editor and the IGS Secretary General are ex-officio members of the committee.
Nominations Committee
The Nominations Committee is traditionally chaired by the immediate Past President of the Society. The Committee is composed of approximately five appointed members and the Secretary General as an ex officio member. The purpose of the Nominations Committee is to prepare, for Council, a slate of nominees to fill the positions of Council Members and Officers whose terms are about to expire. This is done to ensure there are always enough candidates to fill all vacated positions. The Committee applies Equity, Diversity and Inclusion principles in considering whom to nominate for IGS governance positions. These principles, valued at the highest level, ensure that the IGS governance represents diversity of international representation, region, language and ethnic composition, career stage, scientific sub-disciplines within the broadly conceived discipline of glaciology, and gender balance.
Once the slate has been prepared it is circulated among members and further nominations are invited from the IGS membership.
Awards Committee
The Society has several awards that are awarded to worthy recipients on a regular basis. The Awards Committee issues a yearly call for nominations for these awards, receives and evaluates the nominations and makes recommendations to the Council for suitable recipients of the Society’s awards. The committee consists of a Chair, appointed for three years, and approximately five members appointed for one year at the time. In addition, the IGS President and the IGS Secretary General are ex-officio members of the committee.
Membership Committee
The Membership Committee is responsible for all aspects of IGS membership, in particular:
1) Recruitment and retention of members, with the aim of increasing member diversity. The committee will work closely with the National Correspondents to recruit and retain members with an emphasis on under-represented regions. It will also liaise with EGG to ensure the needs of early-career members are being met.
2) Implementation of action items in the Diversity and Inclusion plan approved by Council, including establishing, tracking and reporting on metrics of progress. The committee will absorb the portfolio of the former ad-hoc Committee for Diversity and Inclusivity (ADI) on a permanent basis, thus requiring a significant focus on issues of equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI).
3) Communication between IGS membership and IGS governing bodies (e.g., to receive suggestions, complaints, etc.). Members’ issues related to any aspect of publishing will be dealt with by the IGS Editorial Board and/or the Publications Committee, as appropriate.
4) Compliance of members with IGS core values and the code of conduct. This includes addressing issues of EDI within the IGS.
Members of the Membership Committee will be recruited in a transparent way, reflect the diversity of IGS membership and be approved by Council.
Editorial Board, Journal of Glaciology
The Journal of Glaciology has been the main scientific publication of the Society since its first issue in 1947. It is governed by the IGS Chief Editor, approximately five Associated Chief Editors and approximately 30 Scientific Editors. The Chief Editor and the Associate Chief Editors are appointed by Council for 3-year terms, while Scientific Editors are appointed for 3-year terms by the Chief Editor following approval by the Council. All terms are renewable. The IGS Chief Editor oversees the entire publication process of the Journal of Glaciology and Annals of Glaciology (below) and liaises with the editors and staff of the publisher (Cambridge University Press).
Editorial Board, Annals of Glaciology
The Annals of Glaciology is a thematic journal, where each issue is dedicated to a specific glaciological theme, proposed by IGS members and accepted by the Council. Each Annals of Glaciology issue has one or more appointed Associated Editors and a team of Scientific Editors whose expertise is within the scope of each particular thematic issue. The whole Annals of Glaciology procedure is overseen by the IGS Chief Editor. The issues’ Associate Chief Editors appoint the teams of Scientific Editors for their respective issues.
