Global Glacier Modeling Workshop

Scope of the workshop

This workshop aims to bring together global glacier modelers, providing a platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration.

The focus will be on modeling glaciers (outside the ice sheets) on a global or regional scale, i.e. covering at least one entire region of the 19 Randolph Glacier Inventory (RGI). Themes include any aspect of large-scale modeling of glaciers outside the ice sheets:

  1. Simulations of global/regional-scale glacier mass balance and evolution including projections until 2100 and beyond.
  2. Sensitivity of large-scale glacier evolution models to climate and other input data, and model parameterization choices.
  3. Advances in modeling climatic mass balance (accumulation, melt, refreezing), frontal ablation and ice dynamics in large-scale glacier evolution models.
  4. Advances in calibrating and validating large-scale glacier evolution models including process-based or machine-learning models.
  5. Coupling of global glacier evolution models to global hydrological models.

Organization

  • Participants will have the opportunity to present their research on the listed topics through oral presentations or posters. Oral presentations are primarily reserved for presentations aligned closely with the workshop themes (see above).
  • The agenda will be designed to allow ample time for networking and in-depth discussions, fostering connections and collaboration.
  • A Zoom link will be provided to registered online-only participants; however, Zoom attendees will not have the opportunity to present.

GlacierMIP meeting

An (open) business meeting of the Global Glacier Modeling Intercomparison Project (GlacierMIP), a Targeted Activity of the Climate and Cryosphere Project (CliC) will be held on 12 February, where we will discuss the next phase of GlacierMIP.
Anybody interested in large-scale glacier modelling is welcome to attend the meeting.
Zoom attendance will be possible. A fourth day (13 Febr.) is reserved for direct collaboration discussions/meetings.

Notice of interest in participating

To faciliate our planning for the workshop, we would appreciate if anybody interested in participating (in person or remotely) indicated their interest as soon as possible. Thank you!

Please indicate your interest in participating here

The survey takes only 1-2 minutes to complete, and does not require any payment. You may register for the workshop later.

Practical information

Participants will have to organize their own housing. Campus housing is unfortunately not available. Travel grants are not available. More information to come.

Come earlier or stay longer and combine glacier modeling with skiing !

Oslo is a fantastic destination for skiing, particularly in February when snow conditions are ideal. The city offers a unique combination of both cross-country skiing (hundreds of km of marked and groomed ski trails) and downhill skiing (at Oslo Winter Park at Tryvann). Trails and skilifts are easily accessible by subway/bus from the city center.

Welcome to the Global Glacier Modeling Workshop in Oslo in February 2025!
