In this International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation 2025, and the first World Day for Glaciers coming up on 21 March, who doesn’t want to be at the forefront of glacier, ice sheet, snow, sea ice and all other studies of ice research publications?
The International Glaciological Society (IGS) is searching for two new IGS Associate Chief Editors for a 3-year term starting in June/July 2025.
The IGS publishes the scientific journals Journal of Glaciology and Annals of Glaciology. These long-standing journals have been Gold Open Access since 2016 and have recently gone through a healthy transition to online-only journal publication. Our journals and their publication procedures are continuously enhanced to remain primary outlets for glaciological research and to serve the global glaciological community.
The current Editorial Board of the Journal of Glaciology is healthy and diverse, and is composed of 4 Associate Chief Editors (ACEs) and ~30 Scientific Chief Editors (SEs). Due to an upcoming ACE retirement and the need for further expansion, the IGS would like to appoint two new ACEs. Within the Editorial Board it is important that we have all paper topics covered and that the workload is manageable for all. Therefore, the ACEs that we would like to appoint will be ‘seasoned’ glaciologists with expertise in a combination of several of the following topics, interchangeable between ACE1 and ACE2:
ACE1: Antarctic Ice Sheet; Ice Shelves; Ice Streams; Sea Ice; Ice-Ocean Interaction; Geophysics; Numerical Modelling; Firn processes; Ice flow dynamics; Glaciohydrology; Remote Sensing (preferably active sensors)
ACE2: Alpine Glaciology; Tidewater glaciers; Mass balance; Energy Balance; Mountain glacier modelling; Machine learning/stochastic models; Water resources; Ice flow dynamics; Glacier hazards; Remote Sensing (preferably active sensors); Field instrumentation.
The ACE workload is approximately half a day per week and includes the following tasks:
- You will guide ~30 new Journal of Glaciology manuscripts per year through the peer-review process and will be responsible for their final decisions. You will also deal with any issues that involve the Scientific Editors (SEs), authors, or reviewers of the manuscripts that you are handling.
- ACEs of the Journal of Glaciology, under guidance of the IGS Chief Editor, are involved in higher-level decisions about the direction of both of the IGS publications (Journal of Glaciology and Annals of Glaciology).
- Once every two years, the ACEs will select the shortlist and winners of the Graham Cogley Award for best student publications in the IGS journals.
- You will be part of a vibrant editorial board and participate in annual online and/or in-person board meetings.
- ACEs will represent the IGS Editorial Board and promote the IGS journals at meetings and online.
Applications for ACEs are due Monday 21 April and should include:
- a short application letter/email with your motivation, editorial experience, and a list of topics that you feel comfortable covering as ACE (see above for ACE1/ACE2).
- a short CV (incl. a list of publications or a link to your online profile with publications)
ACE applications are to be emailed to the IGS Chief Editor (hester.jiskoot@uleth.ca) and will be considered by a search committee composed of the current ACEs and relevant IGS Officers and Chair of the Publications Committee, who will recommend appointments to the IGS Council. If these recommendations are endorsed by Council, the IGS will extend offers of 3-year term appointments to the ACEs. All applications will be kept on file in the IGS office.
There is no monetary compensation for the function of ACE: all IGS Editorial Board members are in voluntary positions. When the IGS extends offers for ACE positions the IGS letter can be used to request permission from your current employer and negotiate compensating task relief. We will adhere to a fair application process and implementation of the recommendations in the Final Report of the IGS Ad-hoc Committee on Diversity and Inclusion (ADI).
In case an ACE function is too senior or too time-consuming for you, but you are interested in becoming an SE for the Journal of Glaciology you can always contact the IGS Chief Editor. Currently, we could use some more SE support in the topics: firn, snow mechanics and avalanches, ice-ocean interactions, remote sensing (active sensors incl. SAR, ICESat), applied mathematics/experimental physics.
If you have any questions or suggestions, or want to nominate colleagues for these two ACE positions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
